Pretty Polish: Nail Polish Lingo →

 I realize a lot of the words I use on here could be unfamiliar to people who aren’t obsessed with nail polish, so here’s a lexicon for your convenience.

If you don’t understand some word I’m using please let me know, I’ll definitely give you an explanation and add it to the lexicon.

NOTD – Nail of the Day (basically, whatever nail polish one is currently wearing.)

 HTF/VHTF – Hard to Find or Very Hard to Find.

RAOK – (verb form ROAKing, ROAK’d) Random Act of Kindness (giving someone else free nail polish for altruistic reasons.)

No-Buy – (1)The status of realizing that one is ridiculous, and spends entirely way too much money on nail polish. One consequently over-compensates by vowing to not buy any nail polish indefinitely, followed shortly by a major failure, see related words: Binge. (2) A mythical impossible task like Sisyphus rolling the rock up the mountain.

Stash – One’s nail polish collection, usually hidden from loved ones.

Binge – Uncontrollable desire to buy a seriously ridiculous amount of nail polish, followed by actually making the ridiculous purchase, followed by feelings of guilt and worthlessness, followed by the No-Buy vow.

Lemming - Having an uncontrollable desire for a particular polish after seeing a picture of someone else wearing that color.

Shrinkage - A coat of nail polish that shrinks on one’s nail to create a visible white space with no polish on the tip of the nail. It’s generally a very undesriable side effect of using fast drying top coat over very thickly applied polish. No relation to cold water.

Tip Pull - Looks the same as shrinkage except Tip Pull occurs after a few days of wear. It’s the most common kind of nail polish wear and tear (generally associated with typing) other than regular chipping; An excuse to change one’s nail polish.

Cuticle Drag/Cuticle Pull – The polish-less splotch centered close to the cuticle that comes from using a crappy nail polish that basically removes itself when one applies additional coats; One of life’s most frustrating occurrences.

Frankenpolish/Franken - Mixing a new color from various different polishes.

Dupe – Short for ‘duplicate’. A nail polish that looks exactly like another polish. This is a rare occurrence, especially to someone plagued with the nail board eye.

The Nail Board Eye - A disease that causes the sufferer to be able to distinguish even the slightest difference of color between polishes that are seemingly the same, forcing the sufferer to decide they must own both polishes even though no one else will know that the colors are actually different.

VPL - ‘Visible Polish Line’ – referring to the nail white that is visible under some sheer or jelly polishes.

The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967)

Cupcake Nails!  Tutorial on these nails from: Cupcakes Clothes.  I just used random polishes that matched colors.  She used all Models Own polishes. 

My first attempt at a lightning bolt manicure.  I got my idea from Nailside - she has awesome tutorials! Check her out for more tape manicure ideas… I will be trying more of them! :)

Products Used:

• Base:  Essie - California Coral
• *Black: Wet n Wild - Black Creme
• *Silver Accents:  Revlon - Silver Dollar
• Top Coat: Poshe Super Fast-Drying Top Coat (Big 3 Free and as good as Seche Vite!)

*Both of these are awesome one coaters (recommend for cheapness!)

An ombre spring manicure! I never wear yellow… so I thought I’d try.  Hope these don’t look too much like egg yolks… or PEEPS!

• Sally Hansen Insta Dry - Lightening
• China Glaze - Peachy Keen

I’ve been seeing a lot of cloud manicures out there and they are super cute!  I thought I’d give it a try with a new twist.  Check out my Roy Lichtenstein inspired comic cloud manicure :)

Products Used:

• China Glaze - For Audrey
• Rimmel - Midnight Blue
• Sally Hansen - Whiteout
• No topcoat applied yet, but will probably put some Orly Sec ‘n Dry on later!

I got a little psycho with the glitter… but it like it! Loose green glitter is layered ombre style over blue green polish with thick topcoat.

• OPI - Katy Perry Collection - Last Friday Night
• BonBons - No Color Name… whitish blue glitter. :-)
• Loose Green Glitter on the Tips
• Seche Vite Top Coat

A springy pink manicure.  I have been lemming for Sally Hansen’s Hidden Treasure… but it is nowhere to be found in my local hunting grounds.  Soooo I ordered its supposed dupe: Nubar 2010.  I don’t have Hidden Treasure to compare it to, but it doesn’t matter! I LOVE 2010….oh it is so pretty and dimensional! Pics are not doing it justice! When painting it on, it layers in a way like I’m performing some alchemy and witching up a little opal on my fingernail. Beautiful!

• Nubar - 2010
• Orly - Sec n’ Dry Top Coat

Naked nails - baring their hang nailed souls! My nails got some needed TLC today. Polish removed, cuticles pushed back, filed, shaped, buffed and washed with warm soap & water. Finally a spritz of olive oil massaged into the cuticles and nail beds. 

I built a light box today which is helping me take better pictures…today is the first shot in the box. I think it’s helping a bit - will post more manicures soon!

It’s been a while…sorry bout that!  Here’s my first manicure using the Bundle Monster stamping plates.  I think it turned out well for my first try.  I have found the Bundle Monster full nail pattern plates are not quite wide enough to cover some of my nails, but i was able to re-stamp blank areas.  This swirly pattern is abstract enough that I was able to pull off not having to match up lines perfectly. Oh and these are all drugstore products, so don’t think you’ve gotta dump cash on OPI to have cool nails!

• Revlon Street Wear (this one is old as the sun) - Fever
• Bundle Monster Plate #BM19

Feather Manicure over China Glaze’s Cyberspace from the Tronica collection.  It looks amazing in person. I can’t wait to try different feathers and color combinations!

Supplies: 

• Feathers - from Michael’s.  They have a wide variety, but small detailed patterns are going to give you the most bang for your buck.
• OPI - Nail Envy as base coat
• China Glaze - Cyberspace
• Seche Vite Dry Fast Topcoat*

*I am going to be using this product sparingly due to its nasty chemical formula.  But for this type of manicure a THICK topcoat is necessary.  I’m on the hunt for a Seche Vite replacement - if you know of one, let me know!
